Leave Rovinj's Old Town waterfront heading south and the walk changes character. The marina gives way to Lone Bay, where the shore meets the woods. Punta Corrente, also called Zlatni rt or Golden Cape, is the forest park around this stretch of coast.

From the Old Town to Lone Bay

  1. Start on the Old Town waterfront. Follow the shoreline south past the marina and Hotel Lone.
  2. Continue along the promenade to Lone Bay. The bay is part of the protected park area and makes a clear turnaround point for a short outing.
  3. If you have more time and the paths are open, follow signs towards the Punta Corrente meadow. Look for the Himalayan cedars near the meadow. The Istria Tourist Board describes their planting in the shape of a six-pointed star.

How a headland became a forest park

In 1890, Trieste entrepreneur Georg Hütterott bought land on this coast and began planting trees. He envisioned a health resort. The landscape he helped shape is still visible in the contrast between shaded paths and open meadows. Pines, cypresses and laurels grow alongside trees brought from farther afield, including ginkgo and cedar. The area gained forest park status in 1961.

Getting back to town

From the meadow, retrace the same open paths to Lone Bay. Follow the waterfront back past Hotel Lone and the marina to the Old Town. Leave the wooded section before dark. If the path beyond Lone is closed, make the bay your turnaround point, provided the waterfront approach is open.

Before you go

The city has announced a restoration project. Access to individual paths and entrances during the works still needs confirmation. Check local notices and signs before going beyond Lone Bay. Allow time for stops as well as the walk back. The route has no measured walking time or verified step-free itinerary yet.
