From Kansalaistori square, the spruce facade curves above the entrance like a wave. Step inside and head upstairs: the open reading room, with its rippling white ceiling, is what Oodi calls Book Heaven. This is Helsinki's central library, a public building designed by ALA Architects where you can wander in and spend time without a library card.

What to see inside

Start on the top floor. Browse the shelves, find a seat near the windows facing Parliament House, or take children to the reading and play area. The Citizens' Balcony offers another view over the square when it is open during the warmer months.

On the way back down, look for the Urban Workshop and the studios on the middle floor. The library has sewing machines and 3D printers alongside spaces for recording and making music. You can explore the building freely. Some equipment and rooms require advance booking or a library card.

Getting there from Helsinki Central

Start at Helsinki Central Railway Station. Walk to the Rautatientori end of Eero Erkon katu and use Oodi's entrance on that street. The library is at Töölönlahdenkatu 4 and also has an entrance on Kansalaistori square. If arriving by metro, get off at Rautatientori.

If you are coming from the airport

Take HSL commuter train I or P from the station under the airport terminal to Helsinki Central. Use an ABC ticket. Check the HSL planner for the trip on your date.

Getting back

Leave through the Eero Erkon katu entrance and retrace the walk towards Rautatientori and the station. For the airport, board an I or P departure that calls at Airport (Lentoasema). Check your platform and departure time with HSL.

Before visiting

Oodi lists regular hours of 08:00–21:00 on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 on weekends; check its arrival page for exceptions. You can visit all three floors free without a library card. Some services need a card or reservation.
