Cross the Rhine the slow way: Basel's little ferries

Getting there: Kleinbasel to the cathedral

1. Start at the Kleinbasel end of Mittlere Brücke. Follow the river upstream along Oberer Rheinweg towards Wettsteinbrücke until you reach the Münster ferry landing.
2. Take the Münster-Fähre Leu towards Grossbasel. If the ferry is on the opposite bank, use the bell at the landing. On the Grossbasel side, steps lead up to the Pfalz terrace behind Basel Minster.

Getting back

From the Pfalz, walk through Münsterplatz and down towards Marktplatz. Follow Eisengasse to Mittlere Brücke and cross back to Kleinbasel. If you want to avoid the climb from the ferry landing, Basel Tourism suggests staying on board for a return crossing; confirm the arrangement with the ferryperson. If the ferry is out of service, cross Mittlere Brücke on foot instead.

Before you set off

Check the Leu operator's hours and service information. TNW and SBB tickets and the BaselCard are not valid on this ferry. No fixed walking time or step-free access is assumed.
